Digital Privacy and Safety Precautions When Seeking Help

Device Monitoring: If you suspect your phone or computer is being tracked by spyware or shared family accounts, use a safe computer at a public library, trusted friend's house, or domestic violence shelter.

Browser Clearing: If viewing legal resources on a shared device, clear your browsing history or use incognito mode, but be aware that keystroke loggers or account sync may still record activity.

Address Confidentiality Programs: Most states offer free Address Confidentiality Programs (ACP) that provide a legal substitute mailing address on voter registration, driver's licenses, and court records so abusers cannot locate you.

How much does it cost to file a Domestic Violence Restraining Order?

Under federal law (Violence Against Women Act) and state statutes, filing for a domestic violence protective order is 100% free in all 50 states. There are no court fees, no filing fees, and the sheriff or law enforcement will serve the papers on the restrained party free of charge.

What is the difference between an Emergency Protective Order (EPO) and a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO)?

An Emergency Protective Order (EPO) is requested by a police officer on the scene of a domestic disturbance and lasts only 5–7 days to give you time to get to court. A Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) is issued by a judge at the courthouse and protects you until the formal court hearing (typically 2–3 weeks later).
