A practical guide

Build a useful record of your legal matter

Start with what happened, who was involved, and where the records can be found.

Start with one event

Write a short description in your own words. Record the date if you know it. An approximate date is useful too—label it as approximate instead of guessing an exact day.

Know where the supporting material is

You can reference a document without uploading it. Record the location of a paper copy, the person who holds it, or the court or agency where you expect to find it. A first-page photo should be labeled as a first-page photo.

Add detail when it becomes useful

Keep conversations, documents and real-world events in the same history. Distinguish what you personally observed from what another person told you. You can update an entry later.

Use your record

Review your timeline and document inventory before preparing a summary. Choose the information you want to share and keep your original records available.

Put this into practice.
